Tyler Cowen on iPad →
bfizzle:
Tyler Cowen thinks we’re looking at the wrong market in terms of Kindle vs. iPad. It’s not commercial books, it’s textbooks that are going to be replaced.
“The commercial book trade just isn’t that big in terms of revenue and arguably that sector will shrink with digitalization, as recorded music has been doing.” - This is what I was trying to say yesterday.
My dad was making this...
The weird thing about today's announcement
I’m generally anti-Apple; I make no attempt to hide this. However, something odd occurred to me as I skimmed some of the many criticisms of the iPad. Particularly when I saw complaints like this:
“Just yesterday I was looking at my iPhone thinking ‘Hmmm, I wish this didn’t fit in my pocket and couldn’t make phone calls.’ Then I looked over to my netbook and...

subcon:
I’ve heard this argument before, namely that the kindle/reader are pointless because the iphone can display ebooks. (and the same argument for using a netbook to view ebooks, the bottom line being that the kindle and reader are very limited application devices for what you pay). I recently bought a reader (just a little over a week ago). Prior to this, i had read ebooks on my pc or on...
Schapplefreude (noun)
[shap-uhl-froi-duh]
Satisfaction or pleasure felt at the misfortune of Apple, Inc. or its devout followers.
The announcement of a $500 tablet computer without Flash, still stuck on AT&T—as useless as Steve Jobs’ pancreas—filled Bill Gates with schapplefreude.

Really interesting — though entirely readable — post on how much information is needed to identify someone (or surprisingly, how little). Makes the warnings of web privacy nuts seem a lot more important.
The Question
Will the iSlate revolutionize tablets more like the Apple TV revolutionized television or more like the Macbook Air revolutionized breathing?

White man beats black man.
I like that one, but it’s inaccurate. My summary for Rocky was:
Lifelong loser loses on a bigger stage than usual.
I haven’t done these in a while. Some new ones:

I’m judging you.
David: What are you waiting for?
Leyla: What do you mean?
David: Well what do you want to do?
Leyla: I don't know. Do you know? I mean, I'm sorry but I don't know.
David: Yeah, I do know what I want to do but I'm not doing it. The same as you.
Leyla: I just want to commit to something without any fear.
David: Yeah, I think that's what we'd both like, but it doesn't work like that.
Leyla: I know.
Bing makes public gesture of support for Google in... →
Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.
Outside the company’s gleaming offices in Beijing, a trickle of young people laid floral bouquets and notes at the multicolored sign bearing the Google logo. As daylight faded, two 18-year-old law students approached with a bottle of rice liquor and lit two candles. One of the students said that she wanted to make a public gesture of support for Google, which...

Examine Netflix rental patterns, neighborhood by neighborhood, in a dozen cities. Some titles with distinct patterns are Mad Men, Obsessed and Last Chance Harvey.
Super cool.
